HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall football coach Doc Holliday joined MetroNews Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval on Monday morning as the Herd goes through preseason practices in Huntington.
Marshall enters the upcoming season having won 33 games over the past three years.
“I’ve always said that I want to be the head football coach where standards are extremely high and that’s a good thing – we’re going to embrace that,” Holliday said. “We also understand that we have a responsibility and we can’t forget what got us to where we’ve been over the last three years – that’s go to work everyday, don’t get complacent and make sure we continue to hold each other accountable.”
Herd quarterback Chase Litton is heading into his sophomore season after throwing for 2,605 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions as a freshman last year.
“Anytime you play a true freshman, you always will go through growing pains. But he exceeded my expectations a year ago,” Holliday said. “We’ve seen that growth process happen over the summer and with spring ball. He’s light years ahead of where he was this time last year, so I’m looking forward to him having a great year.”
Marshall was picked third out of the East Division in Conference USA, but Holliday said the expectation is to win the league.
“That’s our ultimate goal and if we don’t win it, the season has not been successful,” Holliday said. “That’s the way it is around here and I like that. That’s the atmosphere we have around here with our team and with our fan base. Our team expects to win and our fans expect to win – I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”
