INSTITUTE, W.Va. — A chemistry professor at West Virginia State University is leading an effort to replace science equipment that was lost in the June flood at impacted high schools and middle schools.
Dr. Micheal Fultz began organizing efforts to collect donations to be put toward STEM programs at flood damaged Herbert Hoover High School, Elkview Middle School and Richwood Middle School.
“We really need to ensure that students are engaged in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields in high school, because if we don’t engage them in high school they won’t study those fields when they come to college, and we need more students in the STEM fields, to help develop the future West Virginia economy,” Fultz said in a news release.
A number of donors, including groups and individuals, have supported the effort and have already donated thousands of dollars.
Fultz, along with the WVSU student chapter of the American Chemical Society, will donate the equipment to the schools once the are ready to receive them. Those donations will be made in a few weeks.
Monetary donations are being accepted through the WVSU Foundation here.
