Man accused of dismembering body waives extradition in Cabell Circuit Court

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The man who authorities said admitted to dismembering a woman’s body in Mason County after she died from an apparent overdose waived extradition back to Ohio Tuesday to face charges.

Richard Hurt, Sr., 47, of Gallipolis, was in Cabell Circuit Court for an extradition hearing Tuesday morning. He is charged with concealment of a deceased human body in Mason County.

In Gallia County, Ohio, he faces charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

The victim, Jessica Berry, 33, of Gallipolis, Ohio died of an apparent overdose on July 19, Hurt said.

Investigators said Hurt admitted to dismembering her body with a saw and putting the remains in trash bags, putting the bags in the trunk of his car for over a day before taking them to Point Pleasant, where he buried them next to a house.

The remains were found in a shallow grave on July 30.

Before Hurt can be returned to Gallia County, he must post bond on the Mason County charge. If he fails to do so, he will not be returned to Ohio, prosecutors said.

Hurt was being held in the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville.
