CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Preliminary county-by-county 2016 Smarter Balanced Assessment results were released Wednesday by the WV Dept. of Education.
Ohio and Monongalia Counties had the highest scores in the state in both the English-language arts and the mathematics portion of the test. In ELA, Ohio scored at 58 percent proficiency and Monongalia was right behind at 57 percent.
The two counties were the only schools to score above 40 percent proficiency in math. Monongalia was 43 percent proficient on that test while Ohio scored at 40 percent.
On the science test, Grant and Jefferson counties each scored the highest at 47 percent, with Doddridge County coming in a close third at 46 percent. Six other counties also scored 40 percent or higher in science.
McDowell County scored the lowest in all three categories, with 34 percent proficiency in ELA, 17 percent in math and 22 percent in science. Upshur County also had only an 18 percent proficiency math score.
The statewide averages were 47 percent proficiency in ELA, 30 percent in math and 36 percent in science.
