Federal, state leaders to announce ‘significant’ funding Wednesday for W.Va. coalfields

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Appalachian Regional Commission and representatives of other agencies will be in Huntington Wednesday to announce federal funding for projects to grow the economy in coalfield communities in West Virginia.

The announcement is part of President Barack Obama’s Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) initiative.

Federal, state and local leaders will meet for the announcement at the Wild Ramp food store in Huntington at 11:00 a.m.

Those officials include Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, Third District Congressman Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.), Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, representatives with the Appalachian Regional Commission, U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and more.

Earlier this year, the ARC and EDA announced that $65.8 million in federal grant money would be handed out to negatively impacted coalfield communities throughout the United States.

According to a news release, the funding would allow those communities to strengthen their economies and work forces.
