Holgorsen suspends Adam Pankey after DUI arrest

West Virginia tackle Adam Pankey signals it’s ‘time to eat’ after blocking for a touchdown during the Mountaineers’ 2015 win against Maryland. The senior, charged with DUI last week, will miss the Sept. 3 opener against Missouri.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia left guard Adam Pankey is suspended following last week’s DUI arrest and will miss the season opener against Missouri, coach Dana Holgorsen announced Tuesday.

“We hold these guys to high expectations, and when you don’t meet that, there’s going to be consequences,” said Holgorsen, noting that Tony Matteo is slated to replace Pankey in the opening week lineup. “We’ll continue the suspension through Missouri and address it at that point.”

Pankey, 22, was charged with driving under the influence after his car flipped in a late-night crash Aug. 13. The senior and 25-game starter registered a blood-alcohol level of .147, police reports showed.

“I’m more just shaking my head,” center Tyler Orlosky said of his fellow lineman’s arrest. “It’s disappointing, but it’s a mistake he has to learn from and hopefully he will.”

Matteo, also a fifth-year senior, has appeared in 18 games and made two starts. Since recovering from a camp injury, he has taken reps at guard and center, making for a smooth transition with pre-snap calls.

“Tony was probably playing better than any of the guards for the first five or six days (of camp), and then he went down,” Holgorsen said. “I think we’ll be fine on the inside.”
