CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The FBI and ATF are involved in the investigation of an early morning car explosion in a Charleston neighborhood. The blast rocked the sleepy community along Woodward Drive around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“There’s a car that is very damaged and that’s about all I can say about it,” said Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper on MetroNews flagship station 580-WCHS.”There are some houses that have their windows blown out.”
Nobody appeared to have suffered any injuries as a result of the explosion according to Cooper.
Bomb sniffing dogs from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad were brought to the scene early in the investigation, but did not detect any evidence of bomb making material around the crime scene. However, authorities are continuing to comb through the wreckage of the Ford Mustang convertible which was demolished in the driveway of a home.
The investigation has a portion of Woodward Drive blocked.
“People are kind of stuck. They can’t get in or out of our crime scene,” said Cooper. “If people want to head up Woodward Drive, they might want to go the Rocky Step and Limestone Fork route.”
The crime scene is within the Charleston City limits.
