Former Marriott worker admits to embezzling nearly $1 million

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former accountant and cashier at the Charleston Marriott Town Center pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to defrauding the hotel out of approximately $1 million over 11 years.

Mark Kuhn, 52, of Milton, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and embezzlement, U.S. Attorney Carol Casto said.

Kuhn embezzled more than $955,000 from November 2005 to February 2016 from money he took from the gift shop, front desk, restaurant and bar. He covered it up by posting false entries in the hotel accounting system, Casto said.

Kuhn used the money to take vacations to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Myrtle Beach and Disney World. He also purchased several vehicles.

Kuhn faces up to 20 years in federal prison when he’s sentenced Dec. 5. He has agreed to repay the amount of money embezzled.
