First Lady Tomblin announces six W.Va. hospitals to host infant safe sleep awareness events in September

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Six West Virginia hospitals will host infant safe sleep awareness events next month, according to a Tuesday announcement by First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin.

The events are part of the Our Babies: Safe and Sound project and the “Say YES to Safe Sleep” campaign to make sure parents are aware of infant safe sleep problems and solutions.

“Unsafe sleep conditions continue to be the leading cause of death for West Virginia infants in the first year of life,” First Lady Tomblin said in a statement. “As we continue to train West Virginia’s hospital employees and home visitation workers, who provide parents and caregivers with educational resources, this campaign will continue to make a huge difference in communities across the Mountain State, in turn saving the lives of even more West Virginia children.”

The tour has expanded to two additional hospitals this year meaning the campaign will now reach 81 percent of West Virginia’s birthing population.

On Tuesday, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin proclaimed September to be Infant Safe Sleep Month in West Virginia.

According to the release, the Our Babies: Safe and Sound project provides parents and other caregivers of infants under the age of one, as well as expectant parents and healthcare professionals, with information and tips on ways to keep babies safe while sleeping and how to keep your cool when babies cry.

The goal of these events are to help prevent West Virginia infants from injury and death.
