NTSB to investigate rail tanker leak at Axiall plant

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Transportation Safety Board is getting involved in the investigation into the chlorine leak in a tanker car at the Axiall plant in Marshall County last Saturday.

The NTSB posted a brief message on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.

“New information about accident prompts NTSB to investigate Saturday’s leak of chlorine from railcar in W.Va. Updates to follow.”

A number of residents in Proctor, Kent, New Martinsville and the Ohio town of Hannibal were forced to leave their homes in an emergency evacuation. Authorities shut down Route 2 in the area of the plant north of New Martinsville and Ohio State Route 7 across the river. Traffic was also stopped on the Ohio River for a period of time.

Two workers were treated and released from a nearby hospital.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board announced earlier this week it would not be investigating.
