Axiall leak: NTSB to take ruptured tank car off-site to investigate

NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. — A ruptured tank car that released 17,000 gallons of chlorine Saturday at the Axiall Plant in Marshall County is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The agency sent three NTSB investigators to the facility in New Martinsville where they gathered relevant documents and interviewed personnel involved in the loading of the tank car.

The team will conduct a tank car damage assessment, review tank car loading procedures and identify materials to be removed for metallurgical examination.

The ruptured section of the rail car will be sent to the NTSB headquarters in Washington D.C. for further review.

Saturday’s leak forced several residents on near the Marshall and Wetzel County line in an emergency evacuation. Two people were sent to the hospital to be treated for inhalation. The leak also shut down roads for several hours.
