BILLINGS, W.Va. — A suspect was killed after brandishing a weapon at state police in Roane County Tuesday afternoon.

State Police said in a release that 65-year-old Bernard Cottrell, of Reedy, was involved in an incident at a relative’s residence in Mineral Wells where he brandished a gun.

A short time later a deputy with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office received information from one of Cotrell’s family members that family was in the process of getting a mental hygiene petition in Roane County for him, due to the fact that he was a threat to himself and others.

Cottrell was encountered by police driving south on Route 14 near Spencer. A vehicle pursuit ensued after the officers attempted to stop him.

The pursuit ended on Route 14 at Randolph Road, when Cotrell pointed a firearm at the officers. The officers responded by discharging their weapons, and Cottrell died at the scene.
