Hampshire County crash claims life of Virginia police officer

CAPON BRIDGE, W.Va. — A Winchester, Va., police officer died in a truck wreck Sunday near his home in Capon Bridge, W.Va., investigators said.

Master Police Officer Mike Brunson, 48, was off-duty when he lost control of his pick-up truck on U.S. Route 50 in Hampshire County near the Virginia state line.

According to West Virginia State Police, emergency crews were called to the scene of the crash at about 4:18 a.m. Brunson was heading west when he traveled off the right side of the roadway and up an embankment then into a culvert hitting a separate embankment causing his vehicle to overturn. The truck came to rest in the parking lot of the Kettle Shop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brunson was a 21-year veteran of the Winchester Police Department.
