WV Parkways Authority to begin transmission line crossing project on Turnpike

CABIN CREEK, W.Va. — The state Parkways Authority, working with Appalachian Power Company, will begin a utility line crossing project Tuesday on the West Virginia Turnpike.

The project includes rolling stops near the Cabin Creek Bridge.

“We’ll just be controlling the traffic. There will be a series of consecutive rolling stops for the north and south bound lanes,” said Tyrone Gore, director of operations for the Parkways Authority.

The rolling first stop will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Each stop will allow enough time between them for the traffic to return to a normal count, Gore said.

“We hope that it has a small impact on the travelers because it’s going to be a rolling stop, so we’re going to keep the traffic moving, but actually with the rolling stops, we’re just going to slow it down,” he explained.

The first phase of the project includes closing the southbound shoulder from Tuesday through Thursday to lower and remove the existing AEP power line.

The second phase begins Sept. 19 where crews will pull lead lines across the highway. The third and final phase will start the next day where the northbound right lane will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The power company is working to improve transmission systems and reliability in both Charleston and Boone County. The Charleston Area Improvements Project includes rebuilding five miles of transmission line. Substations will also be expanded. The project is expected to be complete by 2019.

The Parkways Authority should complete their work by Sept. 30.
