Numbers Mean Little in Week Four!

As we enter week number four of the high school football regular season, a lot of folks will see the rankings put out by the WVSSAC this week and probably think one of two things:  one, their team is in the playoffs, or two, their team’s season is over!  Either way, both will be wrong!

After just playing at most, 30% of the season, no one at this point knows for sure they will be in the playoffs and certainly no one can say with certainty they are out!  No secret, one would rather be 3-0 instead of 0-3, but there is still a lot of the season left.  Now if you want to look at some numbers consider this, with three weeks of eleven in the books, we have 26 teams that are still undefeated and we have 31 teams that have yet to win a game.  If you break those numbers down into classes, we find 5 undefeated and 5 winless teams in Class AAA……in Class AA, the numbers show 11 undefeated and 13 winless and in Class A, we have 10 undefeated and 13 winless.  Now, with the disparity in numbers between the classes, that means 17% of the teams in Class AAA are undefeated and 17% are winless.  In Class AA, those percentages grow to 25% undefeated and 29% winless and in Class A, they show 23% undefeated and 29% winless.  At this early point in the season, it would appear there is a greater chance of having 5-5 teams in the playoffs from Class AA and Class A, than there is in Class AAA!  Again, this early….numbers mean very little!

Coming up this weekend, we do have some wonderful games dotting the scoreboard!  In Class AAA, Cabell Midland (1-2) is in need of a win as the Knights travel to University of Charleston Stadium to battle (2-1) Capital.  George Washington would love to even their record at .500, but they must face a tough (2-1) Spring Valley.  Greenbrier East has won two in a row to see their record stand at (2-1), but to get win number 3, the Spartans have to travel across the state to take on a very good (2-1) Musselman team.  Any, maybe the game of the week in Class AAA finds the (2-1) Wheeling Park Patriots traveling to Morgantown to battle the undefeated Hawks of University.

In Class AA, we have two games featuring four teams that are undefeated!  Logan (3-0) will travel to Mason County to battle (3-0) Point Pleasant and Roane County (3-0) will head to Summersville to take on (3-0) Nicholas County.  Also in Class AA we have a rival game (1-2) Robert C. Byrd traveling to Bridgeport to battle the (3-0) Indians and the Bluefield Beavers will try to find their first win of the season as they visit Gate City, Va.

In Class A, it’s always a battle when (3-0) Wheeling Central travels to Williamstown and the (2-1) Yellow Jackets will be looking to rebound from a loss at Marietta, Ohio last week.  And, how about the big game taking place this Friday night on the campus of Glenville State College as undefeated Sherman (3-0) will take on undefeated Gilmer County, also (3-0).

Don’t forget to check out all of the scores this Friday night on GAMENIGHT….our coverage begins at 9:30 on over 40 great radio stations around the state and at wvmetronews.com.
