Fayette County police, bloodhound capture suspect hiding on river bank

KANAWHA FALLS, W.Va. — A Fayette County man who led Montgomery police officers on an early Wednesday morning chase is behind bars on drug charges thanks to the work of a talented bloodhound.

Police attempted to stop Jackie Lee Danbury, 35, of Cannelton, on minor traffic violations around 4 am Wednesday morning.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Danbury fled south on WV Route 61 in response to police attempts to pull him over.

The pursuit continued onto Boonesboro Road where police say Danbury then abandoned his vehicle and led police on a foot pursuit.

Due to the rugged nature of the terrain and the darkness, officers pursued with the help of a bloodhound named Dixie from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Dixie’s search led to the recovery of several prescription pills and a substantial quantity of methamphetamine packaged for sale.

As the search continued, Dixie found a backpack lying in the brush on the bank of the Kanawha River. Police say Danbury had concealed himself in the mud and debris near the river bank and used the backpack to cover his head.

Police took Danbury into custody following a brief struggle.

“You can run, and you can hide, but if Dixie gets on your trail, you’re going to get caught,” Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a press release.

Danbury faces charges of driving left of center, littering, fleeing in a vehicle with reckless disregard for the safety of others, fleeing on foot, obstructing an officer, battery on a police officer, and possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver.
