MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— The No. 23 West Virginia men’s soccer team scored early and late and held its opponent scoreless for the fifth consecutive match to beat George Mason 3-0 on Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (4-1-1) extended their shutout streak to more than 525 minutes as Jose Santos turned in his fifth shutout of the season. Albert Andres-Llop’s goal in the sixth minute, followed by second-half scores from Felix Angerer and Joey Piatczyc, propelled WVU offensively while the defense held the Patriots (1-4-1) to three shots on goal.
“We kept them in it in the first half, and we should have put that game away in the first half and had a few (goals),” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “In the locker room at 1-0 (at the half) is pretty disappointing, so for us to finally come out and score three goals and have chances to score more, it’s going to be good for us to finally hit the back of the net and build a little bit of confidence.”
WVU held a 21-12 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. Santos made three saves, while George Mason keeper Steffen Kraus stopped nine shots.
