BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man caught driving on a revoked license faces much steeper trouble after a brief flight from authorities Monday morning.
Robert Charles Jordan, 28, of St. Albans was arrested by Putnam County Deputies during a routine traffic stop around 3:30 a.m. Monday. He was charged with driving on a license revoked for DUI. When he was transported to the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville he managed to give deputies the slip.
“He was secured in the police vehicle and handcuffed and as they were arriving at the regional jail he somehow managed to escape custody of the sheriff’s department,” said Corporal Tim Corbett of the Barboursville Police Department.
“The suspect was complaining about being sick coming down the interstate so the deputy rolled the window down halfway,” said Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese. “When the deputy pulled up to the speaker box at the gate to announce he had a prisoner, he was able to reach out the window, because he was handcuffed from the front, open the door and then take off.”
Corbett and his K-9 partner “Gus” were soon on the scene and hot on Jordan’s trail along with a number of officers from surrounding agencies including the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department.
“We managed to get a scent article from the vehicle he was transported in,” said Corbett. “We searched for close to two hours and located him two to two and a half miles west of the jail.”
Officers took Jordan into custody without much resistance since he was still in handcuffs along the banks of the nearby river. He now faces additional charges of escape, obstruction, and fleeing a police officer.
