Fall arrives in the Mountain State

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — This week was a hot start to the fall season in West Virginia with temperatures reaching the 90s in some parts. The first official day of fall was Thursday.

This summer included little precipitation and slightly above normal temperatures, according to Andrew Beaver, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston.

“We are very dry and maybe the flooding back in June would be the only thing that really stands out,” Beaver told MetroNews.

Friday marked three months since the flood that claimed nearly two dozen lives, washed away homes, schools and businesses in parts of central and southeastern West Virginia.

Beaver said he’s predicting a mild fall season.

“It looks like we’re probably going to be right about normal as far as fall once everything starts kicking in. Temperatures are going to be fairly close, precipitation is fairly close to normal,” he said.

This weekend, Beaver said much of the state will remain warm. A cool down is expected later next week.

“It’s going to push our temperatures down into the mid to low 70s, coming from the lowlands even. Our minimum temperature is going to stop dropping down to the 40s,” he said.

“Once that cold filters in the middle of next week, we’re going to start feeling some cool temperatures toward the end of the work week coming up,” Beaver said.
