Which Team Do You Have As #1?

It is always fun each week to look at  the various high school football polls that you can find now and believe me, there are a lot of polls to look at.  Whether it’s  the power rankings at wvmetronews.com (of course that is my personal favorite), the polls found in every local newspaper across the state, the polls talked about on every message board across the state or even all of the expert polls found on Twitter, Facebook or any other form of social media.  As I said, there are a lot of polls to look at.  However, as we all know,  there is only one poll and only  one set of rankings that count and that is the weekly list released each Tuesday afternoon by the WVSSAC.  But I am certain, most folks look at that list and they don’t agree with it.  The good news is, it will work itself out the closer we get to November 5th….which is the final day of the regular season.

As we enter week number six of the high school football season, we find a lot of teams are halfway through their schedule.  In fact, in Class AAA of the 29 teams, 22 have played half of their games for this season.  In Class AA, 23 of 44 have played 5 games and in Class A, of the 44 schools in that classification, 26 have played half of their scheduled games.  That means, of the 117 teams playing high school football 71, or 61% have completed half of their regular season schedule.  With that said, if your favorite high school team is one of those 71, and their record shows 2 wins or less, the playoff hopes this season is dwindling fast and in most cases, are over!  Taking a little deeper look, in Class A of those 26 teams who have played 5 games, there are 15 who two or fewer wins!  In Class AA, 13 of their 23 teams that have played 5 games have two or less fewer wins and in Class AAA, of their 22 teams which have completed half of their regular schedule, 13 have two wins or less!  Certainly, the jury is still out in Class AA and Class A, but with only 29 teams total and 16 of those making the playoffs, we are definitely going to see some .500 teams in the playoffs and don’t be surprised if we have a couple of teams with losing records make the field of 16…..something you know the SSAC doesn’t want to see!I

What can we look forward to this weekend?  In Class AAA, undefeated Hurricane will travel to once beaten Spring Valley, while 4-1 Morgantown will entertain 3-1 Musselman.  The Mohigans are coming off a disappointing 33-6 loss to Martinsburg last Friday night while the Applemen had the week off in preparation for the trip to Mon County!  In Class AA, the big game will find unbeaten and unscored on Nicholas County traveling to Lindside to take on undefeated James Monroe.  While Nicholas County has outscored their first four opponents 152-0, the Mavericks are pretty good themselves having outscored their first four opponents 168-18!  That should be a great game!  Also in Class AA, Sissonville (3-1) will travel to Winfield to battle the (3-1) Generals.  In Class A this weekend, undefeated St. Marys, another high scoring team that has outscored their first four opponents 197-20 will hit the road to take on a very good (4-1) Williamstown team that suffered their only loss of the season three weeks ago when the Yellow Jackets lost on the road at Marietta, Ohio.  Also in Class A, East Hardy will try to improve to (5-0) when they host (4-1) Pendleton County.  The Wildcats only loss this season came in week number two when they dropped a two game at Class AA Petersburg.

Don’t forget to catch your favorite high school team in action this Friday night and then after the game, turn on GAMENIGHT which can be found on 44 great radio stations around the state.  You can also can the live audio stream at wvmetronews.com.

Talk to you Friday night!!
