Morgan County man charged with shooting big buck in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A West Virginia man was arrested this week in a Washington, D.C. neighborhood after allegedly shooting a 14-point buck where hunting is illegal.

Vernon Goyne, of Berkeley Springs, was named in five criminal charges including animal cruelty and possession of an unregistered firearm, police said.

Residents of the Palisades neighborhood in northwest Washington called 911 after hearing gunshots Tuesday night, reports said.

Goyne was dressed in camouflage and carrying a handgun when police found him. They also report he was hitting the deer with a stick. It was still alive but later had to be put down.

The deer weighed about 250 pounds.
