WVU building hopper, former foreign student, enters plea

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The WVU building hopper facing felony charges will avoid a trial.

Dong Xu entered a plea agreement in Monongalia County Circuit Court Thursday.

Xu was arrested in March after police determined he had been storing possessions above ceiling tiles in university buildings, stolen office items and essentially lived in campus buildings for up to a year. There was evidence that he had been using Stansbury, Hodges and Armstrong Halls to hide belongings.

Dong Xu was charged with felony entering without breaking after being arrested on WVU's campus.
Dong Xu was charged with felony entering without breaking after being arrested on WVU’s campus.

A grand jury indicted Xu, who was last listed as a WVU student in 2009, on charges of entering without breaking and possession of materials showing minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Xu admitted to one count of entering without breaking and possessing material of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

At the time of Xu’s arrest, WVU Police Chief Bob Roberts shared remarks about the oddity of the case.

“This is different,” Roberts said. “We’ve had some strange things happen here. This one’s really different.”

Xu will be sentenced at a later date on the two charges. All other charges were dismissed.
