CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Sophie Morgado of Capital High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 16.
A senior, Sophie is a 4.3 g.p.a. AP Honors student and a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Alex and Julie Morgado of Charleston. Sophie serves as the student body president at Capital High School, and is also actively involved in Student Council, Key Club, and Prom Committee.
In both her academic and athletic pursuits, Sophie has excelled at the Kanawha County school. She is team captain of Capital’s girls’ cross country team, and a three-time qualifier for the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) state cross country championships. Competing in the spring outdoor track season, Sophie is a two-time qualifier for the WVSSAC state track & field championships.
On a community level, Sophie is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. She played a key role in organizing student flood relief efforts this past summer at Capital High, helping to collect and deliver relief supplies to affected communities. Sophie has served as a volunteer with the Salvation Army, and has been actively engaged in various volunteer and community service activities through the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council.
Following graduation, Sophie hopes to continue her athletic career on the collegiate level. She plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in Biology and attend Veterinary School.
During the 2016 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award.
