Portable toilet fire does damage to light pole at Marshall’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — At least two portable toilet fires on Marshall University’s Huntington campus, including one that spread to a light pole at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, were the focus of a Monday investigation.

Officials with the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office arrived on scene by early Monday afternoon.

Around 11:50 p.m. Sunday, emergency officials said one of the fires moved from a portable toilet set up outside the football stadium and climbed up a stadium pole damaging electrical wires and cellular equipment.

Early reports indicated the fire had been intentionally set.

The extent of the pole damage was not immediately clear. Engineers were being called in to inspect it, according to Marshall University officials on Monday.

Shortly before that fire, a portable toilet fire was also reportedly set at Marshall’s nearby softball field.

Marshall University’s Thundering Herd is scheduled to host the Charlotte 49ers at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium after a 27-21 win this past Saturday at home against Florida Atlantic.
