The future of learning theme of education summit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — There will be more personalized learning opportunities for students in the future, an education official said Monday during the West Virginia Education Alliance’s 4th annual Education Summit in Charleston.

The summit, titled Excellence in Education: It’s Everyone’s Business, took place at the Charleston Marriott with the keynote address from Khan Academy Vice President of Strategy & Operations Elizabeth Slavitt. Khan Academy is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere by using instructional videos and personalized learning tools.

“They cover topics from Math and Science to economics and History…you name it,” Slavitt said recently on MetroNews “Talkline.” “The videos are short. They tend to be about three to eight minutes and they are on very specific projects.”

The aim of Khan Academy is to help teachers, Slavitt said.

“We’re hoping that we can help empower teachers by giving them yet another tool and help them reach all of the different students whose needs they need to meet,” she said.

Slavitt predicts more individual instruction in the years to come.

The rest of the one-day summit focused on the future of learning.

“Teachers, principals, and other education professionals across the state are working daily to develop our most vital resource, our children. They need help from every sector of the state to match their efforts and help them do more,” Dr. Amelia Courts, president and CEO of The Education Alliance said in a news release. “The 2016 Summit focused on ‘future-forward learning’ and featured nationally-known speakers with examples of local innovation.”

Approximately 250 education, business and community leaders attended the summit.
