CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s unemployment rate was 5.8 percent for the month of September, according to numbers released Tuesday by Workforce West Virginia.
That’s an increase from the previous month. There were 800 more state residents who filed for unemployment benefits.
The number of unemployed state residents increased 800 to 45,600, according to the report.. Total unemployment was down 5,900 over the year. The national unemployment rate was 5.0 percent.
Nonfarm payroll employment dropped 200 in September. There was an increase of 600 in the service-providing sector, which offset a loss of 800 in the goods-producing sector.
The report said the goods-producing sector saw employment losses of 300 in mining and logging. There were 500 job losses in construction. Jobs in manufacturing was unchanged.
Job increases included 100 in information, 900 in professional and business services, and 1,100 in government.
There were declines in trade, transportation and utilities, financial activities, educational and health services, leisure and hospitality and in other services.
