SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The chancellor of the state’s community and technical college system has received a three-year contract extension.
The West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education took the step at a meeting Thursday in the employment of Chancellor Dr. Sarah Tucker. Her current one-year contract runs out Nov. 1.
The council extended the contract at the same pay and benefits. According to WVCTCE Chair Butch Pennington, it’s the right move given the state’s difficult financial situation.
“We’ve been doing this from tuition to president’s pay at each institution. We’ve tried to hold everything right where it is until we get through this financial difficulty,” Pennington said.
Tucker is paid $175,000 a year.
Pennington has high praise for Tucker.
“She’s had to take on some very challenging items this year and has done a great job. I know the council is very pleased with her work,” he said. “She understands what we have to do and most importantly she understands how the system works.”
Tucker was appointed interim chancellor in July 2015 when Jim Skidmore stepped down. The Wheeling native was appointed the permanent chancellor last October.
