Gold & Blue Lunch: Rufus Peabody’s math still loves the Mountaineers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — We’ve heard from Rufus Peabody before, back on Sept. 1 in fact, when one-half of the sports analytics crew at the Massey-Peabody index gave a preseason plug to West Virginia. Had them at No. 20 in his early rankings, long before the AP or coaches polls gave a rip.

Now there’s a 5-0 start backing up what Peabody told MetroNews during the preseason, so “Statewide Sportsline” invited him back to see the probability numbers on the rest of the season.

In today’s Gold & Blue Lunch Report, Peabody lists West Virginia’s win probabilities against TCU and each of the remaining regular-season opponents. Calculations that place the Mountaineers in the conversation for a College Football Playoff berth at season’s end.
