Marshall student hurt after being hit by vehicle, investigation underway

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — No charges were immediately filed against the driver of the vehicle that struck a Marshall University student who was crossing Huntington’s 5th Avenue at 17th Street near Harless Dining Hall.

The female student was being treated at St. Mary’s Medical Center for undisclosed injuries while an investigation from Huntington Police continued.

She was hit around 9 a.m. Thursday.

Initial reports indicated the student who was on foot was in a crosswalk when a traffic light turned green and the driver may not have seen the walker because of buses stopped in other traffic lanes.

The driver of the vehicle involved was also a Marshall student, investigators said.

In a statement Thursday, Dr. Jerome Gilbert, Marshall’s president, said the entire Marshall community was “shaken by the incident and deeply concerned.”

“This is a close-knit community and events such as this impact our entire Marshall family,” Gilbert said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with both the injured student and the driver.”

A counselor from Marshall’s Office of Student Affairs who was at the crash scene was continuing to provide assistance and support to the injured student’s family, according to Gilbert.
