HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The City of Huntington is suing West Virginia Paving Company for allegedly driving up asphalt prices.
The city joins four municipalities, the Kanawha County Commission and the state Division of Highways who have also filed separate lawsuits in connection to the paving allegations.
The other lawsuits, filed this month, allege the companies formed a de facto monopoly by gaining control of 15 asphalt plants that, at one time, competed against each other.
The municipalities that have filed legal action include Charleston, Parkersburg, Beckley and Bluefield.
Huntington officials said the company has done work on city streets for the past several years, spending about $1 million each year for street paving.
Yeager Airport also plans to file a similar lawsuit.
West Virginia Paving and its parent company deny the allegations and have said they will fight the lawsuits.
