MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A partnership connecting the Mountain State and China has been strengthened under a new energy collaboration.
West Virginia University and Shenhua Energy Company of Beijing have worked together in research, development, training and education.
In a memorandum announcement Thursday on the Waterfront in Morgantown, the higher education facility and coal producer announced joint work on clean energy technology.
“The Shenhua Group has developed a vision as a global comprehensive energy company, including clean low-carbon coal utilization, nuclear power, wind, solar and coal-to-chemicals,” said Brian Anderson, director of WVU’s Energy Institute. “The partnership between WVU and Shenhua will allow WVU students and faculty to further collaborate with leading scientists in China on the next generation low-carbon energy technologies that will be essential to simultaneously lowering our environmental footprint while utilizing the carbon fuel resources abundant in West Virginia and China.”
China’s largest coal producer will collaborate with WVU’s engineering, business, agriculture, natural resources, arts and science and law programs.
University officials expect to work with the company in a number of facets from clean low-carbon coal utilization, nuclear power, wind, solar and coal-to-chemicals technology and innovation.
