SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — A Harpers Ferry man involved in a traffic accident Wednesday morning has died.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Flowing Springs Rd and Job Corps Rd just after 7:30 a.m.

Raymond Whalen was turning left from Job Corps Rd toward Charles Town when his vehicle and a vehicle driven by a 17 year old collided.

Whalen was taken to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

“Mr. Whalen was ejected from the vehicle,” Jefferson County Sheriff Pete Dougherty said. “He was not wearing his seat belt.

The 17 year old had minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital.

He was wearing a seat belt.

Dougherty said it is a reminder for everyone.

“Not only to drive defensively, but to take advantage of every safety precaution you can.”

A utility pole was also struck during the accident.

While Dougherty does not believe there were any traffic violations or illegal activity involved with the crash, the accident is still under investigation.
