Gold & Blue Lunch: Howard’s risky business at goal line

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Skyler Howard was “selling out to get in the end zone” when he hurdled a Kansas defender, flipped midair and whirlybirded to the turf.

“Seemed like I was up in the air forever,” joked West Virginia’s quarterback. “I saw a bunch of memories. I was in the air enough time to think about life a little bit.”

Imagine what his teammates were thinking. Concussion? Collarbone? Their Big 12 pennant chase in a full-body cast?

Receiver Shelton Gibson pulled Howard’s facemask and verbalized what the QB’s mom was thinking from the bleachers: “I never, ever, ever, ever want to see you do that again.”

The Gold & Blue Lunch takes stock of Howard’s risky maneuver and all the ups-and-downs from a 48-21 win over Kansas that elevated West Virginia to No. 11 in the AP rankings and No. 10 in the coaches poll.
