CHARLESTON, W.Va. — After hearing reports from precincts throughout the county Tuesday morning, Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick is now predicting a voter turnout of 65 percent.
“In 2008 we had 62 percent but I’m thinking we’re going to have around 60 to 65 percent,” McCormick.
Election morning was filled with some of the same problems including poll workers not showing up and a few of the machines not working exactly right but the issues have been few, McCormick said.
There are 174 precincts in Kanawha County and it’s possible that there will be lines at several of them when the polls close at 7:30 p.m., McCormick said.
“They will be able to vote. We’ll give them a voter waiting permit and everybody gets to vote,” she said.
A bigger turnout may delay the vote counting procedures because will take more time for the poll workers to wrap up their work and get the ballots to downtown Charleston for tabulation, McCormick said.
“It might take a little bit longer tonight if we have lines (at 7:30),” McCormick said.
