CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Sunday hunting movement in West Virginia is alive and well. Voters in 11 West Virginia counties on Tuesday voted yes to authorize Sunday hunting on private property.
“We were pretty optimistic Sunday hunting was going to pass in most of the counties, but we didn’t expect all of the counties,” said Jason Webb with the National Shooting Sports Foundation. “We’re very grateful for those who saw this is a personal property rights issue.”
The margin of approval was nearly 2 to 1 in every county with the exception of Monongalia County, where it was approved almost 3-1.
Webb said, “Over 188,000 people cast their vote in favor of Sunday hunting on private property. We moved from 22 counties to 33 counties and now a majority of West Virginia counties have Sunday hunting.”
Webb hoped Tuesday’s vote in favor of Sunday hunting would also send a message to the new legislature in January.
“I hope the legislature takes this up and passes it once and for all in all 55 counties,” Webb told MetroNews. “This is not a partisan issue, there’s as many Democrats as Republicans who support this. I think this gives some confidence to legislators, especially new legislators this is what West Virginians want.”
