Burned body in Fayette County died of gunshot wound; no connection made in arson case

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — A Fayette County homicide investigation revealed that the person found in a burning vehicle on Dempsey Mountain earlier this week died as a result of a gunshot wound.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office finished the autopsy Wednesday, which revealed the unidentified male had died before the fire engulfed the vehicle.

Firefighters discovered the body inside a vehicle following a brush fire Monday night in the Dempsey Mountain area near Fayetteville.

Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Harrah said law enforcement has a good idea of who the deceased is, but have not finished the confirmation process.

Additionally, police are not ruling anything out, but have yet to find any connection between this incident and a Fayette County arson that led to two deaths.

One tip has led police to believe that a light-colored pick-up truck was in the area around the time of the incident.

Police are still seeking public help–especially from anyone who may have been in the Dempsey Mountain area between 6 pm and 8 pm on Monday, November 7.

Tips are encouraged and should be left with the Fayette County 911 Center at 304-574-3590.
