Brunch Bill active in West Virginia

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Legislation allowing certain types of businesses to sell alcohol starting at 10:00 Sunday mornings went into effect Sunday in counties where voters supported the measure.

Jefferson County led the way in promoting and ultimately supporting the so called Brunch Bill with about 73 percent voter approval.

Christian Asam, proprietor of the Bavarian Inn just outside of Shepherdstown, said on Talkline Monday the first day went well.

“I took a brief look around the room and I would say about half the guests that were having brunch were partaking in Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s as well,” Asam said.

Asam said Jefferson County relies heavily on tourism so perception is important.

“The tourism spend in Jefferson County was somewhere around $750 million (per year)”, he said.

Kanahwa County was closest to Jefferson with roughly $350 million spent.

Asam said it is also nice feature to offer their guests and will be an important tool for the Eastern Panhandle.

“We are, actively in the hospitality business, fighting some stereotypes that some people do have.”

A small reception was held at the Bavarian Inn yesterday for area officials who supported the legislation ahead of the General Election.
