MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Ponder this riddle during today’s Gold & Blue Lunch Report: Did Martell Pettaway’s 181 yards validate West Virginia’s supreme depth at running back, or does it prove the Mountaineers’ offensive line remains vastly underrated?
After all, the no-longer-redshirted freshman Pettaway became the fourth 100-yard rusher for West Virginia this season. (And if you recall Skyler Howard’s 89 yards at Texas Tech, it means WVU was close to having a fifth.)
No riddle to the improvement of Rasul Douglas. His confidence has caught up with his talent, putting him in the conversation for All-American kudos.
Stuck in traffic on Allen Lazard’s 67-yard catch-and-run, Douglas otherwise produced a strong Saturday at Iowa State: Two pass breakups, his FBS-leading eighth interception and, the cornerback’s personal favorite, a chase-down strip of David Montgomery that foiled a 46-yard run.
“He was about to score, but we never give up, because there’s always a chance you can catch him,” Douglas said. “Harp did a good job holding him up, and I was running hard. I seen (Montgomery) put the ball out here, so I just Charles Tillman’d, Josh Norman’d him and punched the ball right out.”
