IAEGER, W.Va. — A McDowell County teenager died Sunday when he tried to protect his mother from her ex-boyfriend, state police said.
Jeremy Daugherty, 16, died of multiple gunshot wounds early Sunday morning at his home on Coon Branch Hollow near the town of Iaeger. His mother, Jessica Daugherty, was in critical condition Monday at Pikeville Regional Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky. She also suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Michael Kennedy, 32, of Iaeger, allegedly entered the home at 2 a.m. and began shooting. He faces a number of charges including first degree murder and attempted murder. State police troopers also allege Kennedy stole several items from the residence. He was arrested in Wyoming County.
Kennedy was arraigned Monday in Wyoming County Magistrate Court on six of the seven charges. Bail was set at $300,000. He was to be arraigned on the murder charge in McDowell County Magistrate Court late Monday afternoon.
State police are continuing their investigation.
Other reports said Kennedy and Daugherty were formerly married. State police were unable to confirm the information.
