MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Lanay Montgomery’s 23 points, season-high 18 rebounds and six blocks propelled No. 16 West Virginia to a 94-53 win over Morehead State on Wednesday night.
“I thought Lanay Montgomery had a great game. Thank goodness we had her today,” said Mountaineers Mike Carey. “She was the difference in the game, defensively and offensively, so great job by Lanay.
Montgomery made 10-of-11 field-goal attempts and became the second Mountaineers women’s player to score at least 20-plus points, grab at least 18 rebounds and block five or more shots. Only WVU Hall of Famer Georgeann Wells had a better performance against Marshall in 1984 with 35 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks.
Montgomery’s layup led West Virginia (8-0) to 13 unanswered points and a 27-15 lead.
Teana Muldrow also produced her third double-double this season with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while adding four assists, three blocks and three steals.
Tynice Martin added 17 points while Kristina King had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Miranda Crockett’s 18 points led Morehead State (3-5).
