Georgia man found guilty of beating W.Va. state trooper

PRINCETON, W.Va. — A Georgia man was convicted Thursday of maliciously assaulting a West Virginia State Trooper.

Michael Wayne Lowery, 55, of Carrollton, Ga. was found guilty of assaulting a law enforcement officer and three counts including the unlawful wounding of a government employee and obstructing a law enforcement officer in performance of his duty.

The incident happened at the Walmart in Princeton back in June 2015.

An altercation between Lowery and Senior State Trooper J.R. Tupper resulted in head injuries to Tupper that included lacerations requiring 10 stitches. Tupper’s retractable metal baton was used to hit him.

The unlawful wounding of a government employee charge carries a term of 2 to 5 years in prison. The other two charges Lowery was convicted on carry a term of 1 to 3 years in prison.
