WVSSAC director excited about live television for Super Six

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — This weekend’s Super Six High School football championships in Wheeling will be available to a much wider audience.  In addition to the traditional MetroNews coverage on radio stations across the state, television coverage of the games will be streamed to the Metronews Channel at WVMetronews.com and the Class AA game Friday night and the Class AAA game Saturday at noon will be carried live on Root Sports.

“In the long run it just helps the perception of the games and the enhancements you can do in-game as well as on TV or on streaming,” said Bernie Dolan, Executive Director of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission.

Metronews Television has broadcast the state high school basketball championships for many years and last year added the state high school baseball championships from Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.  This year will be the first year for the football broadcast by MetroNews.

“The production level and product quality is going to be incredible,” Dolan said. “If you go back and look at what happens in basketball and then this past year in baseball, we expect the same kind of thing.  That’s the type of product we want our name attached to.”

Dolan admitted there has always been a concern televising the games live potentially hurts attendance, but added times have changed and the SSAC is embracing the future.

“The SSAC receives no tax dollars, so all of our money is generated basically from football and basketball, so it was a big concern,” he said. “That’s probably one of the things that has held us back, but in this day in age we’re already doing streaming and we thought it was a great opportunity.”

MetroNews’ Travis Jones will handle the play by play duties and former West Virginia University quarterback Rasheed Marshall will be the color commentator on all three television broadcasts.

The Class AA title game features Mingo Central against Fairmont Senior on Friday night at 7 p.m.  The Class AAA championship will be Martinsburg vs. Spring Valley at noon Saturday.   The Class A game will be East Hardy vs. St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. Saturday night. All three games will be video streamed live at WVMetronews.com
