UPDATE: Escaped inmate recaptured in Randolph County

UPDATE (10:15 am)

According to Lt. Michael Baylous of the West Virginia State Police, McAtee has been taken into custody in Randolph County.

McAtee had been on the run from law enforcement after overwhelming a Correction’s Officer at Davis Medical Center shortly after 3 a.m.

ELKINS, W.Va. — The inmate who escaped Davis Medical Center in Randolph County early this morning is still on the run, but has been identified by law enforcement as Mark McAtee, a 22-year-old Harrison County native.

According to Randolph County 911, McAtee is a white man, 5-foot-10-inches and 160 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, black pants and black boots. McAtee was also wearing glasses, according to police.

McAtee is considered armed and dangerous. He is possibly carrying a homemade “shiv.”

Businesses in downtown Elkins remained on lock down until about 8 am  after McAtee apparently assaulted a correctional officer during his escape from the hospital around 3 a.m. this morning.

Police are believed to be searching an area near Rt. 33 for him, where they believe McAtee may have abandoned a light blue 2005 Ford Taurus.

He is believed to now be on foot. The area being searched is near Revelle’s River Resort off of Faulkner Road in Randolph County.

McAtee was previously serving 1 to 15 years in Huttsonville Correctional Facility for a burglary conviction.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact their nearest State Police detachment or 911 immediately.
