Funeral arrangements set for former Secretary of State Ken Hechler

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Funeral arrangements are scheduled next week for former longtime West Virginia Congressman and Secretary of State Ken Hechler.

Hechler died at home Saturday at the age of 102.

His funeral will be held next Monday, Dec. 19 at the state Culture Center in Charleston beginning at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hechler, a Democrat, served served nine terms in Congress from 1959 to 1977. He ran for Secretary of State in 1984 and held the position for four terms.

He was a World War II veteran, served in several positions in the Truman administration, taught one semester at Marshall University and marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1965 at Selma, Alabama.
