AKRON, Ohio – Noah Robotham scored 27 points and Akron kept Marshall winless on the road, 99-88 Saturday night.
Marshall (6-4) continued its road struggles despite Stevie Browning’s 31 points. Austin Loop hit five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points.
The Herd had opportunities to erase a 53-42 halftime deficit but the Zips answered every charge.
“We were right there,” coach Dan D’Antoni said. “The next four possessions we went into ‘hero mode,’ trying to do their own thing instead of playing within the offense. Hopefully, they’ll learn from that and be better for it.”
Akron shot 58.6 percent from the field, including 15-for-28 from outside. It wasn’t as though Marshall shot badly on the night. The Herd was 47.6 percent from the field.
Jon Elmore registered his second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, but struggled with 3-for-16 shooting and just 1-of-4 at the free-throw line.
Marshall was also without the services of senior Ryan Taylor, who missed the trip with what was reported to be a sore calf. Terrence Thompson was also out for Saturday’s game, still recovering from an abdominal injury.
