Powerful Appropriations Committee among Manchin’s committee assignments

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin has been assigned to be a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence when the Senate convenes next year.

“As a member of these new committees, as well as a new member of Senate leadership, I will have a greater influence over where our federal dollars are going, and how our country’s intelligence activities and programs keep us safe,” Manchin said in a prepared statement. “In addition, I look forward to continuing to work for the people of West Virginia on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, two uniquely important committees that affect our state greatly.”

The Republicans have the majority in the Senate so Manchin will be part of the minority members of the various committees.

Meanwhile, during an appearance Tuesday on MetroNews “Talkline” Manchin praised this week’s news of West Virginia receiving an additional $87 million in flood recovery funding. Manchin said the money will help fill in the gaps.

“Some of the people just didn’t have the losses where FEMA was able to help. There’s an awful lot that can be done if it’s distributed in the right way and I think it will be,” Manchin said.

State Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jimmy Gianato released the following statement to MetroNews Tuesday concerning the new funding:

“We sincerely appreciate the work of our Congressional Delegation to bring this much needed recovery funding to help the citizens of our state impacted by the June Flooding.  This funding will help to span the gaps that other Federal and State Agencies cannot cover.  The Governor has stressed to HUD the importance of the flexibility of this money to allow the State to best meet the needs of our state as it rebuilds its infrastructure for long term resiliency,” Gianato said.
