West Virginia women climb to 12-0 but suffer two injuries

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Lanay Montgomery had 16 points and 10 rebounds and climbed into second place on the school’s career blocks list, but No. 13 West Virginia’s 77-45 win over Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday may prove memorable because of the players it lost.

Mountaineers coach Mike Carey speculated that Katrina Pardee suffered a broken nose or concussion on a hard foul that knocked her to the floor. Alexis Brewer later sustained a knee injury on another hard foul.

“I kept saying I just wanted to get out of here without injury, and we didn’t,” Carey said.

Kristina King registered her first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Tynice Martin added 16 points and Teana Muldrow scored 14 for West Virginia (12-0). Chania Ray finished with six assists, eight points and six rebounds.

But the postgame tone revolved around Brewer’s upcoming MRI, and Pardee “going to the hospital about her nose to get reset or whatever,” Carey said.

He was frustrated by the rough plays, leading to a brief exchange with Mount St. Mary’s coach Bryan Whitten as trainers attended to Brewer.

“We can’t let people take shots at us,” Carey said. “There was two technical fouls in a row on two straight plays. The refs did a good job, and I will say this: They don’t play that way normally. We have played them many times. Those kind of things normally don’t happen.”

Pardee had started all 12 games while averaging 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 20 minutes. Her 18 3-pointers ar second the team. Brewer was playin more than 22 minutes off the bench and compiling 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds.

The Mountaineers sprinted out to a 19-3 lead in the first quarter and coasted to their 32nd straight nonconference win at home. The Mount (2-9) trimmed the WVU lead to 10 points early in the second quarter, but WVU responded with 11 consecutive points.

Montgomery’s five blocks pushed her career total to 273, passing former teammate Aysa Bussie (270) for second on WVU’s all-time list. The senior made her first five shots to extend her consecutive field goals made streak to 14, before it ended in the first half. She finished 7-of-9 from the field.

West Virginia shot 47 percent from the field (32-of-67) and scored a season-high 56 points in the paint. The Mountaineers dominated the rebounding 51-31 and limited the Mount to 28.8 percent (17-of-59) from the field, marking the 13th consecutive opponent to shoot less than 40 percent.

West Virginia joins the 2010-11 squad (14-0) and the 2002-03 team (11-0) in finishing the nonconference schedule undefeated.
