McDowell County sues prescription drug distributors

WELCH, W.Va. — The McDowell County Commission filed a lawsuit Friday against three large out-of-state drug distributors blaming the companies for playing a role in the county’s opioid epidemic.

AmerisourceBergen, McKesson Corp. and Cardinal Health are named as the defendants. The lawsuit alleges the companies’ drive for profit decimated McDowell County residents who succumbed to prescription drug addiction. The county has the largest drug overdose rate in the nation.

The lawsuit also names Dr. Harold A. Cofer Jr who has been under investigation for his prescription writing habits.
