West Virginia ski resorts ready for a white Christmas

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Timberline Resort in Tucker County is open for the season. The opening means all of West Virginia’s ski areas are now open for the 2016-17 ski season.

“Temperatures have been cold enough to make snow and we’ve had a little bit of natural snow,” said West Virginia Ski Areas Association Spokesman Joe Stevens. “With the holiday season upon us we are in really great shape.”

The Christmas and New Year’s holiday are an important time for the West Virginia resorts and draw a lot of travelers from out of state.

“The holiday season is extremely important, it’s probably about 35 to 40 percent of the yearly budget,” said Stevens. “It’s not that cold and most of our travelers come from the south.  They’ll be able to enjoy a nice, white Christmas at all the resorts.”

Winterplace, Oglebay, and Canaan Valley opened last week and Snowshoe Mountain opened in November.
