Annual Christmas tree collection this weekend

PRESS RELEASE FROM W.VA. DEP

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection
(WVDEP) Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) and Division of Natural
Resources (DNR) are teaming up to collect real Christmas trees to be recycled as fish habitat in lakes across the state.

Trees will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Capitol Market in
Charleston. Any size tree will be accepted, provided that it is a real tree. All lights, ornaments, and tinsel must be removed before the tree is donated. There is no limit on the number of trees an individual may donate.

DNR personnel will repurpose the donated trees as fish habitat in Beech Fork Lake, Cheat Lake, East Lynn Lake, Stonewall Jackson Lake, Summersville Lake, Sutton Lake and Tygart Lake.

Those who donate trees can also sign up to win one of several prizes. Three one-night stays at Twin Falls State Park will be awarded, as will a $25 gift certificate to Capitol Market. Everyone who donates a tree will receive a gift from the WVDEP’s REAP Recycling Program.
